What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
I try to exercise as much patience as possible. I know that there are so many factors when it comes to landing a great radio job. It's very much like finding love. You have to find someone (a Program Director) who GETS YOU, sees who you are, and envisions what you can be.
How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Learning everything I can about the Sales side of the business. I'm in the process of talking with a few companies right now. I love radio. I want to work in radio for the rest of my career. If that's on the Sales side; that's fine. They have much nicer cars.
Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I have come to realize that Sports radio and music are very similar. Most people like pop music. Is most pop music good? In my opinion; no. Does pop music sell? Yes. Is most Sports radio good? In my opinion; no. Do the top Sports radio shows sell? Yes. Radio is all about ratings and catering to the masses. Most people like listening to two guys in matching radio station polos talking about blocking schemes. I think that kind of Sports radio sucks. I've come to realize that many people might not like the Sports radio that I create and I'm okay with that. As long as my show is fun, authentic and interesting; that's all that matters to me.
Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Yeah. She's a cold, heartless woman, but I still love her.
What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
26 months.
What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Reach out to a friend that already has two feet in the door.
What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
I guess I have to say All Access here. Hahahahahaha! No--you guys are great. It's where I found my last job. I also check Radio Company careers sites every day.
What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I wrote, produced and recorded a song for the hiring manager.
What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Depends on who's reading this.
Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Samesies.
