1. What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
My passion for radio/music is what drives me to stay motivated. I love the career field I chose!
2. How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I've been writing and recording music, playing video games, but I'm also doing as much as I can to keep my head in the game and still know what's going on in the world of rock (and radio in general). I've also picked up a gig bartending which is fun since it let's me interact with people.
3. Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Radio is still a great business, but I feel like it needs a revitalization. I have ways to help do that...once I get off the beach.
4. Do you plan on sticking with radio?
Absolutely! It's my passion and I love it!
5. What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
You're looking at it. Sure it's only been about 3-4 months, BUT it feels like an eternity!
6. What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
If I had the answer I probably wouldnt be filling this out right now! Haha. Although I would have to say be willing to wear multiple hats, and take on multiple formats. That should open up more opportunities.
7. What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
I'm constantly checking All Access multiple times a day, I also get the RAMP email, and will check in with other radio people about once or twice a month to see if they have heard of any openings (or have any openings).
8. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
It's not really "crazy" but just being persistent. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
9. What's the next job you'd like to obtain?
Anything full-time at this point, but ideally I would like to still program (preferably Active Rock) and somewhere warm wouldn't hurt either.
10. Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
I feel like everyone is trying to cut costs and save money (which I understand), but I feel like salaries (at least in some places) are on the low end based on cost of living in certain areas.
Bonus Questions
Care to contribute a recipe for our "On The Beach" cookbook
1 part me + 1 part radio = a winning recipe!
In all food seriousness though, I do have a culinary degree (and yes I do bring goodies in to stations that I have worked at).
Baked Mac + Cheese
- 1 Cup macaron noodles (large elbows work best)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (I prefer sharp cheddar)
- 1 egg
- ¼ tsp salt
- ⅔ cup milk
- ⅛ tsp paprika
- Pinch of cayenne pepper
- Bread crumbs (panko works well)
- Parmesan cheese (¼ cup)
Cook noodles on stove till al dente, drain, and layer in a buttered baking dish, sprinkling each layer with some of the shredded cheddar.
Beat the egg, salt, milk, paprika, and cayenne until blended together and pour over the noodles.
Top with bread crumbs and parmesan.
Bake at 350° for 30-40 minutes.
