1. What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and to stay motivated?
Staying positive. I know this is only temporary and my next opportunity is out there.
2. How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I love nature walks. I do a few miles every day.
3. Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
With the latest cutbacks it definitely is discouraging. I started in radio back in 1986 (as an intern). It’s a different industry than it was then. Radio has evolved, but I am still old school when it comes to having live and local talent in the studio, that is what the listeners deserve.
4. Do you plan on sticking with radio?
I’d like to. I am looking both in and out of radio right now.
5. What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
10 months now.
6. What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
It’s all about connections. I’ve also tried to use social media letting everyone know I am available.
7. What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
I check All Access every morning, as well as all the corporate radio sites.
8. What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I don’t know if I’ve ever done anything crazy...but I’ll do whatever it takes now to get the job I want!
9. What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
My last job was PD and morning host of a Classic Hits station. That format is my passion. I have two decades of research in the format and a love for it that you will not find anywhere else. I’d love to work in the format again, either in programming or on the air. I created a killer playlist that spans 1976-1999, along with decade specific imaging that sounds so good on air and features like “Oh Wow Wednesday” that is appointment radio which will make listeners want to tune in!
10. Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Yes and no. It depends on the market you are in. My last market was a smaller one and so was my salary, but I was doing what I loved. I’ve worked in New York City and Washington, D.C. before that, where wages were much more livable, granted the cost of living was higher too.
