Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I started out working with Mark & Brian at KLOS/LA. Then, I hosted mornings on the now-defunct 92.5 The Flash in San Diego. Later, I went on to do afternoons and held APD/MD duties at X103.9 San Bernardino/Riverside. Finally, I ended up doing nights at Rock 101 KUFO in Portland. In addition, I have held various positions working in radio and TV, including a stint as Music Director for the X-Games for ESPN. A few years ago, a death in the family forced me to leave radio to take over the family business. Most recently, I have been doing a lot of V/O work from my home studio.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I am spending a ton of time with my kids.
2) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I must say that the time I have spent away from radio has really changed my outlook on the industry as a whole. I feel that I have matured quite a bit over the years and the time away has given me a much better grasp of what I need to accomplish when the next gig comes calling.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
I hope to give it at least one more shot. If that doesn't work ...I was thinking of getting in to professional kickboxing, I hear it's the sport of the future.
4) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
Let's put it this way: I'm really...really tan.
5) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
If I knew the answer to that question, I wouldn't have to answer it here!
6) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
www.AllAccess.com. Also, through friends and networking.
7) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I would love to do mornings again ... in some form or another. Writing and producing topical comedy bits is what I really enjoy, so even producing a morning show would be fun. However, I would also welcome the opportunity to hold the APD/MD title again...
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
Show up drunk ... date my co-workers ... blackmail my boss ... lock myself in the studio and shout profanities into the microphone for several hours, then quit.
Oh, the question was separate yourself ... I thought you meant ...never mind.
9) What do you miss most about music/radio? The least?
Pros: I miss being around the music, doing the interviews, interacting with the listeners, and doing something that I truly love. Cons: PDs with no vision (you know who you are) and ... smelly microphones.
I view radio stations like a fish bowl sometimes; there are those jocks out there who are really popular inside the building. However, outside in the real public, most people hate their guts. I mean; the PD could put nothing but 30 seconds of dead air in-between songs and pull better ratings. However, somehow the entire station staff worships these guys. Everyone from the production guy to the front desk girl thinks that this guy invented comedy radio.
But on the flip-side ... whenever people find out that you work at that station or have worked there, they are like, "WTF?" And you never have an answer. Ultimately you feel embarrassed of ever even working there. It's one of those weird things that I know everyone of you can relate to ... I don't miss that.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
It's not like the brochure...
