Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
Currently tracking for WLMI/Ridgeway, PA, middays. I've worked at WMTX/Tampa, WNCI/Columbus, WKZA/Jamestown, NY, WKSN-A and WHUG/Jamestown, NY (the above includes mornings, middays and weekends).
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
When you wake in the morning, think positive. If you can't ... concentrate on something that will induce a positive mental attitude. When you're positive, you're more productive. You should be constantly cultivating a positive attitude and make yourself bolder, better, stronger, faster. (I let Kanye borrow that hook for his song).
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I track a daily show for a Country station in Pennsylvania. I'm also doing some basic voiceover stuff for a station in upstate NY.
3) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Try to sleep my way to the top. I then found out that she was a 68-year-old cleaning lady in the boss' office. Hopefully, she had a good time, though.
4) Do you plan on sticking with the radio industry?
Absolutely; it's what I was made to do. I love people and the challenge to make a connection with each listener. I love radio because it's intimate/interactive. Radio has the power to be local and relate to the listener.
5) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Jumping from my hometown radio station to a top-20 market -- Tampa. I had a wealth of great mentors to get me there ... Jimmy Steele and JJ Michaels. They took the time to help me become versatile and flexible to handle any format.
6) What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
Learning is a never-ending process. Be it one year or 20+ years in the biz, you can always learn from people. Those who get it, give back while learning. Oh, and you have to make sure look before you jump ... there could be a bush of thorns where you land.
7) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Keep the faith, learn from the pros, and find your own unique niche. Stay grounded and treat listeners and clients with the utmost respect. Last -- don't ever think you're too much of a big shot to get your own coffee.
8) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I love mornings. It's that or a professional stripper. I don't think that'll work 'cause my ass looks fat in a thong.
9) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
Education, talent, creativity, versatility and unpredictability. I get radio. I know that content must be compelling. You have to keep it fresh and relate to the listener and the world around them.
10) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I've observed that it sucks out here ... let me back in, let me back in! To be serious, I become enlightened. I get to interact more and exchange great stories; I get to listen to more morning shows and pick out the good from the bad and learn from it.
Bonus Questions
Care to contribute a low-cost recipe to our "ON THE BEACH" cookbook?
I modified this recipe from Allison Koplan:
Stuffed "BAM" Bacon Cheddar BBQ Burger.
1 lb. ground chuck
1 lb. ground round
2 tsp. black pepper, freshly ground
3 cloves of garlic
8 oz. block of Colby jack cheese, coarsely shredded
1 lb. bacon, cooked and crumbled
2 medium Vidalia onions, sliced
1 tbsp. butter
1 bottle of sweet barbecue sauce (of your choice)
Hamburger bunsIn a bowl mix together the ground chuck, ground round, minced garlic, and black pepper.
Form into burger patties.
Take 3 tbsp each of crumbled bacon and cheddar cheese. Mix together and roll into a ball - set to the side.
Saute your Vidalia onions in a pan with 1 tbsp of butter and about 1/4 cup of BBQ sauce.
After saute, set to the side.
Butter hamburger buns and lightly grill, then set to side.
Now take your "Bacon cheese ball" and flatten, then insert into burger patty. Make sure no cheese is exposed. Cook, flipping twice. Remove from grill and place on buns. Add caramelized onions and extra condiments needed. -
