Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I have always had a love for radio! I first worked for the Kent State University radio station in college and three days before I graduated, I got a weekend gig at WHBC (Mix 94.1) in Canton, OH. About two years later, I was offered a co-host position on the morning show! Through all my experiences I've learned that I truly love radio, especially the mornings!
In February 2008, the station moved its show into a new direction and now I find myself excited for my next on-air opportunity! The decision was not performance-based.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I reminded myself daily that I love my profession; it is what I am meant to do with my life. I love to entertain and make people laugh. If I have brought a smile to someone's face while they're listening to me on-air, then I have done my job that day! I miss being on the radio, and I realize no matter what happens, or how long I have to search, the right job is out there for me.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Working on furnishing my new townhouse. I am no interior designer, but I do know how do add just the right touch! And I am watching a lot of "Golden Girls" reruns. Love that show! It's "Sex In The City" circa the 1980s!
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
I have noticed the lack of live and local stations. Voicetracked stations are more common than ever. Personalities are not a top priority, and that is so frustrating. We are worth it!
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Persistence! If you want the job, put yourself out there and let them know you want it! They can't ignore you forever.
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I have already worked my dream job -- morning radio, so that is what I would like to obtain again.
6) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I have a true love for what I do. I am myself 100% of the time. I have experience on Adobe Audition, Audicy and ENCO. I am a team player and a show prep maniac! I show up to work and won't leave until the job is done. I understand that radio is not a 9-5 job. I will show up two to three hours before my shift and stay after to prepare for the next day. I love meeting and mingling with the community. I am a people person who just wants to have fun!
7) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Oh my, yes! I love listening to gather new ideas and hear how other personalities run their shows. Radio is full of change, and every station is different, so any chance I get to listen I do- to learn!
8) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
Totally! I don't have to go to sleep in the middle of the day anymore (even though I really did not mind!). I see and talk to my friends and family more during "normal hours," which is good and bad in itself.
9) Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
If you would have asked in February, I would have said WHBC (Mix 94.1). I would love to still be in radio, but who knows! Maybe I will own my own station!
10) Oprah or Dr. Phil?
Dr. Phil all the way! He is hilarious. His voice, his bald head and his great sayings ... come on! He is great! I love when he asks a guest a question and when he or she does not really answer it, he says, "That's nice ... now answer my question!" (Think of him saying that with his accent ... so funny!)
