Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
28-year veteran.
Past stints have included mornings with WMGM in Atlantic City, NJ; middays with WELI-AM in New Haven, CT; and weekends/swing with WHYN-AM in Springfield, MS.1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
If you've been in any field where layoffs or firings come with the territory, then you learn very quickly the concept of resiliency, and go with it from there. You've also got to believe in yourself; especially if your job loss wasn't your fault.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I have a bit more time to read (the first book I bought after I lost my job was Bob Eubanks' memoirs, "It's In the Book, Bob"); I'm also able to make time to do things around the house, or run errands. When I'm stressed, I play my drums; when I'm feeling a little down, I play one of my guitars or my bass.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
Absolutely.
4) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
In the past, I have looked to the trades (like ALL ACCESS) where I have had the most success. I have never had the good fortune of having lots of contacts, since many people I have known over the years have left the industry.
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
Ideally, I'd like for it to be long-term. I'm not especially picky as to the daypart, although I will pass on overnights. My background is in mainstream AC, Standards and Oldies.
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
For the most part, protocol has deteriorated drastically over time. However, I recently applied to a station where I got an e-mail from the PD, thanking me for my response. To make a long story short, we wound up commiserating over the seemingly total disregard for simple common courtesy, let alone follow-through from PD's, ODs, etc., especially in the wake of corporatization.
7) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
I don't listen much, but not because I'm on the outside looking in. Over the last several years, I've invested a minor fortune converting over my record collection to CDs and I listen to them.
8) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
Well, just like when I did mornings, I enjoy my afternoon "beauty sleep," and on Martin Luther King Day, I can count on being home to watch my Knicks play a matinee game at The Garden (I have a dish).
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
I was once hired by a station to replace their morning team, who had literally driven away the core demo while unintentionally gaining a demo the station deemed irrelevant. It took a little time, but I was able to gain their core demographic back, as well as the station's credibility.
10) How will this experience change you when you get back to work?
It won't, at least not in the philosophical sense, anyway. Unemployment can be compared to a bad case of the flu in one respect: You're happy when it's over.
