Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I started in radio as a jock in college, and it kind of snowballed from there. I got my first paying gig at Planet 93.5. Then when they switched to 93 Rock, I scored the 7-midnight gig. That is the shift I have done my whole career for both 93 and 97 Rock.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I do a little Stuart Smalley, you know, the "I am good enough, smart enough, and gosh darn it people like me." It actually helps.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I am currently working at a local Hot Topic. Then again, I did that even while I was working in radio. The things we do for this business.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the radio biz?
I hope so. It is kind of like a drug, or comic books. Once you are hooked there is no going back.
4) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
I actually went to college! I even have a four year degree, and it is not in partying (that was my minor).
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I want a full time Alternative or Active Rock gig, preferably in a top 100 market.
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, emails, rejection letters, etc.)
You mean people actually respond?!
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I prep like nobody's business. That and my sense of humor is a little on the Peter Griffin side. (I just said "Peter.")
8) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
I pulled in some monster ratings during the Fall of '05. I was actually number one 12+. I beat out two Top 40 stations and a heritage Country station. Not bad. Within those numbers lied a whopping 46 share men 18-34. Oh yeah, I have also interviewed Blink 182. (May they rest in peace.)
9) What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
People are not as receptive to a guy with a Mr. Microphone on a street corner.
10) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Don't ... 'til I get another gig first.
Bonus Questions
1) Uh oh ... now you're on your own for getting new music. If applicable, name your three most recent purchases since leaving the biz.
Rise Against "The Sufferer and The Witness," The Bouncing Souls "The Gold Record," and AFI "Decemberunderground."
