Career history ...
Brief?? HA!! Who in radio has a brief history unless you're new??? But okay, last five years, 104.3 HIT-FM El Paso, MAGIC 92.5 and Z90/San Diego, 103.9, formerly know as THE PARTY in Phoenix.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Honestly it's a day to day thing. I left my last job because everything that I had worked so hard for seemed all for nothing. I thought I had finally beat a stereotype about women not be treated fairly in the biz. Alas, I was wrong, but I will get motivated again to get out there and REALLY prove them wrong!!!
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I've gone back to school. I went to massage therapy school years ago and now I have gone back to get my holistic health practitioner license.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the radio biz?
YES! I'm feeling that I'm really just on a break right now. I'm trying to push my voiceover services (www.jazmine-star.com). I know I know, cheap plug, but I really do have a an extremely diverse sound. And hopefully I'll be able to get my foot back in the door here in San Diego, now that some great people are running Z90; Magic; and 91X. Ahem!!! Rick, you got my number!
4) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
Hold on to your seat, this is CRAZY!! I've actually WORKED really, really hard to make it happen. Too bad a prettier picture was painted then what actually was. But it's all good, it was an excellent learning experience.
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I would love to be full time again here in San Diego, with stripes of some kind, i.e.- Music Director or APD. Or I'd like to work at a Rock station as a jock. It's sooooooooo hard to get out of the CHR stigma that is put on us CHR jocks. Check out my Rock demo on my website!
6) Are you finding salaries/benefits lower than you ever thought, about the same, or have you seen some pleasant surprises?
Until we have more corporate competition, salary and benefits will be limited in many cases.
7) What's the most unbelievable question you've ever been asked in an interview?
Mmmmm, I would have to say being asked to pay for my own flight and accommodations to go out to an interview. I mean, if you want me, wouldn't you pay for me??? And they asked me to pay without any kind of reimbursement.
8) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs, how do you separate yourself from the pack?
Good question. I know most females in the biz are either midday jocks or the 'laughing' girl/sidekick of the morning show. I stand out because I have helped start up a station, been MD/APD, and afternoons at a CHR and been #1 afternoons in less two books, up against a heritage CHR. I have done nights at a Jammin' Oldies station in a market with two powerhouse CHR stations and doubled my numbers and was #3 in the market in ONE BOOK. Not many females in the biz even GET that kind of opportunity. I have a very inviting voice and I'm down to earth with my listeners. I work my ass of to get the job done.
9) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
Well, I have been and probably always will be a work-a-holic. But since my break, I actually have time for a personal life and I'm enjoying being in a solid, loving relationship.
10) In your opinion, what has been your biggest career accomplishment in the industry?
Building HIT-FM in El Paso. We -- meaning Danny Wright, Dario, and Johnny Kage -- took a jockless station and made a name not only for the station but for ourselves in a market where one station has dominated for years. We also really helped to push and make House/Dance music a mainstream sound in El Paso. With the right % of House/Dance music with Hip Hop, you truly can make an amazing CHR/R station.
Bonus Questions
What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
The only thing I have learned is that I REALLY do I have an addiction. What is it?? WORK!
If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in radio?
Blah! I already was only making chump change for what I was doing. The next step would be to go back to interning.
Any reading you can recommend to people who need something inspirational to read?
PD Chronicles. it's not so much inspirational as it is giving a heads up on what to expect.
