Please begin by giving us a brief career history ...
I started in Newport, OR, where I did nights and had to have friends call in to play excited listeners. so I could make a demo tape ... back in the day. I was at KDGE/Dallas as Production Director/imaging guy in the mid-'90s and also had a stint at KKZN doing mornings. I moved to FL for middays and Imaging Director of O-Rock, and then took over as Imaging Director for the cluster here in Orlando.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
Well, I've been drinking a LOT, but without a job it's getting kind of harder to do!
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I've got some irons in the fire with voice work and production on the side, but would still love to find a full-time gig. I think my dog enjoys the quality time, too.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
Don't get a negative attitude. Budget cuts happen in any industry, and it's part of business. You just gotta roll with the changes.
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Oh! You use your FOOT! Man, have I been doing it wrong. Thanks for the tip!
5) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
I'm a production guy. That's all I ever wanted to do in the business from day one!
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied? (Callbacks, e-mails, rejection letters, etc.)
I'm sure it will be better now that I know you use your FOOT!
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
I think in today's climate, it's important to wear a lot of hats. A lot of hats ... and pants. I believe employers like it when you remember to put them on in the morning before work.
8) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Yes, actually I like to stay on top of what's currently out there.
9) Is there anything specific that you regret doing while you were still working?
I think I should have utilized my talents across the company more. Once again with the more hats thing ... oh, and pants, too...
10) How will this experience change you when you get back to work?
Capitalize on my talents more ... and learn how to spell.
