BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I am a second generation 20-plus-year radio warrior. I got started in the biz at the ripe age of 15 in Austin, Texas (KNLE) in the mid/late-'80s. I then moved on to Houston, working at then (Oldies) KNUZ and KSBJ. I then moved on to KLAZ/Little Rock and WEZB (B97) and Mix 104.1 in New Orleans. More recently, I worked at KTST and KQOB in Oklahoma City and at KOMG/Springfield, MO programming Top 40 and Country along the way.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I stay focused and keep my head up. I stay clear of the negative talk about radio and how it will never be like it used to, knowing there are a lot of great radio owners and managers looking for a solid talent/employee, with integrity, to make their station grow. I want to be that person.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
I am blessed to have learned many things while in radio ... everything from audio to video editing. I do voice work and video presentations on the side to keep my broadcasting juices flowing.
3) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
The economy has taken its toll on the radio business, with mass layoffs and such. You have to stay focused. That is the MOST important thing to remember. I am a firm believer that when one door closes there is a window open down the hall. Keep walking down the hall and you will find that open window.
4) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
I plan on sticking in the business as long as I can. Radio is my passion and it is what I love, and do, the best.
5) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
I have been real fortunate up until now. This would be it, going on nine months. Unfortunately, this is probably one of the worst times to be laid off and on the beach.
6) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
I honestly would have to say All Access. Twice in my career you all have been the vessel carrying the info I needed to secure a job. I am VERY thankful All Access is such a widely used resource.
7) What's the craziest thing you've ever done to get a job?
LOL! One time I bought a gigantic chocolate chip cookie with my name and number written in frosting, as well as a solid chocolate telephone with the words on a card, "...It sure would be SWEET to hear from you!" It WORKED! Just think, with every delicious bite they saw my name and phone number.
8) Are you spending as much time listening to radio as you used to?
Even more! I like hearing what other radio stations are doing and what promotions and ideas are getting people amp'ed up. I'm constantly absorbing as much as I can, and plan on taking it with me wherever I land.
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
My biggest career accomplishment is helping people in need. I enjoy raising awareness and money for charities like Children's Miracle Network and St. Jude. There is no greater feeling.
10) What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
How much I miss working day to day ... how I look forward to waking up, drinking a cup of coffee while soaking in all the local and national headlines so I can plan out a show and share the important and fun info with the listeners.
