BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started my radio career at KZUE/El Reno, OK. Moving to L.A. in 1988, I attended and graduated from Los Angeles Broadcasters school (now the Kodak theater), then moved on to three different stations in Ventura, CA, then on to San Bernardino, CA, and Antelope Valley to do mornings at KMGX. In 1996, I was hired by KOST/L.A. for weekends, which led to late-nights, Lovesongs on the Coast and other shifts, before ending up at KBIG.
1) What do you do to maintain a positive mental attitude and stay motivated?
I keep daydreaming and really picture myself in a studio. A lot of times the daydream literally turns into an actual dream. It's the only way to keep sane ... keeping hope alive.
2) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Looking for all other possibilities, radio related and not. Gotta feed my wife and kids.
3) Do you plan on sticking with the music/radio industry?
I'll always shoot for radio even though it's obvious that those who are working end up getting the next gig. Sad but true. Yet I keep at it. I've come close but each time, the person from the inside or the local person has gotten it. Mine is coming, though...
4) What's the best way to get your foot in the door?
Keep plugging. Never give up. All you need is for that "one" door to open.
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
All Access, but I reach out to individual stations as well.
6) What is the next job you'd like to obtain?
The next job. Seriously. Regardless of how big or small of a market. Getting back to work is a refreshing idea.
7) With consolidation there are definitely fewer jobs. How do you separate yourself from the pack?
Each one of us has a unique talent of his/her own. I can concentrate on separating myself from the pack, but it all depends on whether the PD/OM likes your work and sees your potential, which he/she will decide within seconds of listening to your aircheck.
8) Are you able to slow down and enjoy free time, doing things with your family and friends that you probably did not have time to do while you were working?
Absolutely not. I sadly stay away from family and friends (with the exception of my wife and kids; they are my pillars of strength). I know I'm feeling down and I don't want to affect them in a negative way.
9) What has been your biggest career accomplishment?
Making it to L.A. and staying for nearly 10 years.
10) What have you learned about yourself, others, or life in general in your downtime?
A lot. I've looked back on all that I did and didn't do and made myself a better man, personally and professionally.
Bonus Questions
What great movies have you recently seen?
"Funny People" with Adam Sandler. I don't get a chance to watch movies for grown ups as I have small kids, so I enjoyed that one very much.
