1) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I wanted to do something in music, I just didn't know what. Then I encountered a local morning show on my radio one day. They invited me down to the studio, and I was hooked. I had to be a DJ.
2) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now what you didn't then, would you still do it?
I can't imagine myself doing anything else. I would definitely go about things differently and take more advantage of things in the industry I may have let pass me up along the way.
3) How long have you been at KMRQ (Rock 96.7) and what makes this station so unique?
I started here in 2001, and then it became Spanish in 2005. I pretty much gave up on radio and went into warehousing logistics. In 2008, my former coworker called me and wanted me back for the relaunch of Rock 96-7. I've been here ever since. My time in logistics really helped me get to understand my audience better. That is what makes this station unique.
4) You also do the morning show on Rock 96.7 as Bueller In The Morning. How do you balance your time so both your music programming and morning show are effective?
My morning show is a lot of fun, and is what literally gets me out of bed in the morning. Programming a station is not something I thought I would ever do, but once it fell in my lap I really began to appreciate it. Most of my focus is on my show, but I would say it's probably like a 60/40 split between the show and programming.
5) Let's talk about the music on KMRQ. How much latitude beyond the iHeart Premium Choice selections does the station have?
I pretty much have complete freedom, which is great. Once my PD and I structured the clocks and categories, I was pretty much given the keys to the car. We talk music once a week and I give my PD my thoughts on what we should or shouldn't do, explain why I think we should do this, and he will give me a green light, or we will rework some stuff.
6) Tell us how Rock 96.7 stacks up against any market competition for Rock in the Modesto Valley area?
Luckily for me, we are the only Active Rock station in town. #smallmarketproblems
7) What's your take on current music in the Active Rock format?
I love that Korn, Metallica, and Green Day are getting back to their roots. Also, it is refreshing to hear bands like A Day To Remember, Highly Suspect and Ghost bring something fresh to the format.
8) How does your station utilize the KMRQ website and other social media (Facebook, Twitter) as an interactive marketing tool with your listeners?
I blog daily on the station website, and I use social media to try and bring people to my blog. Aside from that, I am extremely interactive with my listeners. They get a completely unfiltered look into my life via Facebook and Instagram and we have a sort of bond because of that.
9) Is Rock 96.7 doing any special holiday or year-end promotions of note? If so, what are the details?
We actually just wrapped up two big ones. Sending someone to Metallica's Fox Theater show, and flying someone down to L.A. for In Flames and Hellyeah, plus a day at Universal Studios.
10) Finally, with as much as you have on your work plate, what do you like to do to relax when you're not fully in radio mode?
I am a father first. My kids come home to me every day after school, so my afternoons are filled with homework help. Aside from that, I love to BBQ, watch Mixed Martial Arts, and travel.
