RADIO CAREER OUTLINE:
KSSB-fm 106.3 1997-1998 Cal State San Bernardino, CA.
KNAC.COM 1998-2002 Los Angeles, CA
KNIN-fm 92.9 2002-2003 Wichita Falls, Texas
KBZS-fm 106.3 2003-current Wichita Falls, Texas1) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
I was always a rock music lover and knew that I wanted to do something with music but I didn't know what. Once I got the opportunity to flutter my wings at KNAC.COM I knew this was my calling. That is to entertain and inform over the front of a song, while giving calls, taking phoners, and preselling. I got this shit down.
2) How do you feel terrestrial radio competes with the satellite radio and Internet these days?
You can't localize your station when you're on the net, it's a global audience. Satellite is the same way. To grab the attention of your listeners, showing that you are one of them is the way I've found success. You are not untouchable, you are one of them, just like them, in turn, they know you, they listen to you, they relate to you, and you win.
3) How is the relationship between programmer and record label changing? For better or worse?
Getting product isn't what it used to be. I remember when there wasn't a form and I had to walk over to my GM and say "can you sign this" oh wait that was just last week, wasn't it? How things can change overnight.
4) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
There are a few: KNCN, C101, in Corpus, Texas just kicks ass. KIOZ, San Diego's Rock 105.3, El Paso KLAQ, and KISS in San Antonio, KMOD in Tulsa, hi Don!
5) What format does not exist that should? Would it work?
All Metal, All the time. No it wouldn't work, because not enough businesses would want to buy advertising; therefore, no money, no station. It's a sad story.
6) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
Freakin' webmaster. Dude, I want things up NOW. "Contest starts tomorrow" are the words of a salesperson and I'm saying, "We can't get that up today." Give the web guys 2 weeks to get anything up means nothing.
7) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
I have a CD player with 6 discs in it. Disc 1 is a Dallas local band, Monkeyshyne (they're chick acoustic rock, kinda like the Goo Goo Dolls), then I have the good old classic "Season in the Abyss" from Slayer, "Mesmerize" from System of a down, "10,000" fists from Disturbed, Drowning Pool "Desensitized" and Anthrax "No Hit Wonders"
8) What is the most rewarding promotion or activity your station has ever been involved with to benefit the community or a charity?
We recently did a really cool promotion for Hurricane Katrina victims. We sent a jock up an oil derek and he wasn't allowed to come down till we got $10,000 and a big rig full of donations. He was up there 3 days. It was an awesome on-air community promotion. We also do radiothons each year for
9) What are your three favorite artists or songs of this year?
Avenged, Sevenfold, "Bat Country." They're bringin' back the solo
10) How do you position the station musically and why did you choose this direction?
We have a cluster of 4 station, The Buzz used to be an AC, the reason it was flipped was because we had NO male targeted station in our cluster. This is the sole reason for the Buzz existence; it's all about the Benjamin's.
Bonus Questions
Who would be your dream guest on the show?
Ozzy on pain meds.
Favorite artist you have met?
Tie between Rob Halford and Slash.
Have you listened to Sirius or XM yet? How does it compare to what we're doing on the commercial side?
Yeah I listed, I like it, but it's only for the Uber P1. My husband is a middle of the road radio listener and his complain is," They don't play anything I know" so once again the old radio technique of familiarity is key, doesn't' apply to these Uber P1 stations with 100 new songs that no one knows in rotation.
You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be?
Tommy Lee. He's now college educated. Kinda.
What other stations and markets do you like to keep track of?
All of them.
Who is the most amazing talent you've worked with?
Mark Mendoza from the old Pirate Radio, KNAC.COM days. He's amazing, totally out there, but an amazing talent, I wish I could hire him. I think we'd have to find him first, I believe he got lost back in 2001.
What is your biggest pet peeve with your airstaff?
Stealing pens from the control room. For the love of all that is real, put the thing back in the cup.
What will convince you to add a song that you feel isn't right for the station?
Callout, position and what my "panel" of stations is doing.
