...and now I'm in Tampa imaging WMTX, WFUS, WXTB and doing overnights on WXTB1) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment thatmade you realize "this is it"?
Running the salad bar at Ryan's Steak House was not working out, so I interned at WTRS and they hired me the next day.. Shane Finch said you have 20 hours to learn the board and how to run a remote you start this weekend. About 10 minutes into what they called "work," I was hooked.
2) What was your first job in radio?
Stunt boy/production guy/board op. for WTRS/WMFQ in Ocala
Early influences?
Imaging: I was fortunate to find a solid influence and path early on. John Frost is and will always be the imaging god. Then I found out about Malcolm Ryker and Will Morgan, who I work with now, and they are just the two best people by far....
For on-air: Jed the Fish and Whip
3) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
Probably an auto mechanic, still stuck in Ocala, with 26 kids running around the woods with deer antlers on.
4) Where do you see the industry and yourself five years from now?
Industry: Let's see what Obama can do with this economy and go from there.
Me: Rich from WWW.PROMOPIRATES.COM ... HA HA ...who knows? I never thought I would be doing half the stuff I've done five years ago.
5) What is the biggest change that you'd like to see happen in the business?
Egos go away and ass-kissers to follow shortly after, with a healthy backbone to come back to programming. (Oops, did I say that out loud?)
6) Who is your favorite air personality not on your staff?
Whip in Denver; he is looney toons! I love that guy.
7) What is your favorite radio station outside of the market and why?
I would have to say KROQ or this small FM in southern GA that plays all B-sides, and the only imaging is the legal ID.
8) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Country ... I love it!
9) What format does not exist that should?
All punk
Would it work?
Apparently not ... RIP, XM Fungus
10) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
I have a 5-disc changer, so:
Rise Against - Appeal To Reason
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies - They Love Their Country
Hollywood Undead - Swan Songs
As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us
Gary Allan - Smoke Rings in the DarkBonus Questions
Have you listened to Sirius or XM yet? How does it compare to what we're doing on the commercial side?
What, losing their ass? HA HA HA! Just kidding ... I have to say I like it. Well, till they got rid of Fungus.
How often do you aircheck your own shows? Is it mandatory that you run tape everyday? Also, can you honestly critique yourself?
I listen everyday. I play stuff for other people that I respect and go from there
You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be and don't limit it to our format?
Kelly Clarkson... but with lower expectations and a yearning for tubby-tattooed guys
Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _________?
Monster energy drinks and a good laugh
What other stations and markets do you like to keep track of?
Live 105, project 9-6-1, and KROQ and KSYR
