BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
Sixteen years old on-air at a college radio station in 1978 and still seeing America ... one radio station at a time!
1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
An old single-wide, chicken coop trailer converted to studios in Wickford, RI. If standing, still has chicken feathers in the cart bin ... I learned how to sleep, nodding at town hall meetings every Monday night -- and every morning since, I eat two hard boiled eggs and my right foot claws dirt every morning
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment that made you realize "this is it"?
At age eight, after listening to 92 PRO-FM's Howard Hoffman, I knew I wanted to do what he was doing. So every night from the moment of sign-on, I would listen and eventually transcribe his ramp intros. Then every weekend, I compiled my top-20 song list.
I bugged my parents to take me to Kmart or Woolworths. With money I made mowing lawns and delivering newspapers, I bought the staton's playlist in 45s and asked my friends in the neighborhood to vote on their favorites. (Every Saturday morning before American Bandstand, we'd piled into my small, newspaper, wall-papered bedroom, drag out the all-in-one record player and cassette recorder, and replayed our own Top 20 (Kasey Kasem meets the Wolfman on crack-style) and had a blast!!
Wouldn't Howard's bits as a delivery template scorn your brains, too? I couldn't be happier!
3) What career path would you be following had it not been for this industry?
TV "Red Carpet" host/interviewer.
4) How do you feel terrestrial radio competes with the satellite radio and Internet these days?
Satellite and iPods compete with us. We're local.
5) Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Active, Alternative Rock , AAA, NAC or Top 40
6) What format does not exist that should?
Punk Country
Would it work?
Colt Ford
7) If you could add any one full-time position to your budget with no questions asked, what would it be?
Afternoon-drive female
8) What's the best concert you've been to so far this year and why?
Alice In Chains - Tabernacle, ATL. The intimate setting was eerily breathtaking.
9) Tell us what music we would find on your car or home CD player (or turntable) right now and what is it you enjoy about that particular selection?
Steve Miller Band - Bingo! I've played it start to finish at LEAST 20 times in three days. It's what happens when "Fly Like An Eagle" and "Book Of Dreams" collide with modern day Joe Satriani & Jimmie Vaughn!
10) How do you interact with your sales staff?
I let my OM, do that. He's sooo much more convincing!
Bonus Questions
What was the first song or full-length release you purchased?
BEATLES- Revolver
You're stuck on a deserted island and you get to pick one artist to be stuck with you. Who would it be and don't limit it to our format?
Jessica Simpson ... duh!
