Your tax dollars at work:
A dire warning yesterday from the Congressional Budget Office. The CBO issued a new report saying that the total federal debt will double by the middle of the next decade and reach more than twice the size of the entire U-S economy by 2037, unless Congress radically shifts gears on taxes and spending.
The CBO report says were currently in the worst financial shape since a brief period during World War II, when spending jumped to fund the war effort, but returned to normal soon after the war ended. (Pacelli)Guilty Pleasures:
No winner in Saturday night's drawing for the Powerball Lottery. That means tonight's drawing is valued at $177 million ($120.6 million cash value). Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, DC and the U-S Virgin Islands. Chances of winning the grand prize (all five numbers plus the powerball) are 1 in 195.2 million.
Sucking the life out of the wire services:
There are so many available photos of LINDSAY LOHAN naked you sort of wonder why anyone would care about her wardrobe malfunction while filming the tele-flick biopic on ELIZABETH TAYLOR, "Liz and Dick," but we got the usual hyperventilating yesterday.
During a scene on the set opposite GRANT BOWLER, who plays on-again-off-again husband RICHARD BURTON in the film, the two of them are arguing and he grabs Lohan by the arm and her left boob popped out of the retro 1960s-style sundress she was wearing. Cue the blue screen, because heaven help readers of, say, the NY Post, NY Daily News, or Yahoo's horrendously bad OMG! feature that they actually show the real deal.
The paparazzi were a clickin', but the photo wouldn't get them much moola since Lindsay Lohan nude photos are pretty much a dime a dozen.
The movie premieres on the Lifetime channel in November. (Maiman)Designer Update:
The Living God of Shoe Design, CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN, has revealed the reason the soles of all his stilettos are the color red. Louboutin told Grazia that "...red is a symbol of a lot of culture. It has a different signification but never a bad one." He also says that "even if you don't like colors, [everyone] will end up having something red." (Bartha)
Looking for love in all the wrong places:
A Florida woman was arrested for allegedly beating her boyfriend when he said "no" to her marriage proposal.
The NY Post reports 24-year-old NIKOLETS KAROLY had reportedly been hoping that getting married would get her a green card. And, cops say she got so mad at her boyfriend's rejection, she scratched and choked him. This incident, of course, just increases the odds that she'll be deported. (Still)Grace notes:
HERB REED, the last surviving original member of THE PLATTERS, has died. He was 83. Herb actually founded the vocal group in Los Angeles back in 1953. He was the bass singer, so that's Herb you hear doing the spoken part in the middle of The Platter's best known tune, "My Prayer." Herb was the only member of the group to stay through all the lineup changes, and appeared on just about all of the group's nearly 400 recordings. (Marino)
