Gourd alert:
Time to get a pumpkin for the front door? If you want a truly unique carving besides the usual jack-o-lantern, this site has a great gallery of photos to give you ideas: http://www.PumpkinGutter.com.
Food and Nutrition:
Just in time for Halloween: a Change.org petition calling for M&Ms to get rid of its artificial dyes --especially the yellow and red ones-- in favor of natural coloring.
The group behind the petition, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, says the dyes have been linked to hyperactivity in kids and thus aren't worth the risk. It hasn't been able to get the FDA on board, however, so it's now going after companies one by one; M&Ms maker Mars Inc. is first. Kellogg's and General Mills, which use the dyes in a wide range of foods, are next.
So is this cause for Halloween worry? A story about the petition in the Syracuse News-Standard wraps up with a quote from a pediatrician with four kids of his own: "The best thing to do is use common sense. Eating M&Ms occasionally as a treat is fine. Eating a pound a day is not."
Editor's note: This pediatrician is so wrong it's not even funny. He's totally out of line recommending people use common sense. (Maiman)Filling a need:
A New York company is selling beer-flavored ice cream.
It's called Frozen Pints and it comes in seven different flavors, including Peach Lambic, Malted Milk Chocolate Stout, and Pumpkin Ale. The alcohol content comes in around three-point-two per cent and a one-pound tub costs seven bucks. Company founder ARI FLEISCHER said he got the idea after a friend spiller beer into his ice cream at a party. (Still)Sucks to be you:
Life ain't always easy when your dad is rich and famous --just ask poor little CHARLIE CRYER. The 13-year-old son of JON CRYER is having a tough time because he can't keep up with the other kids at his exclusive, expensive school. TMZ.com reports Jon's ex-wife, SARAH TRIGGER, is ticked off she receives just eight-thousand dollars per-month to raise their little guy, complains they can't go on exotic vacations to Europe and Thailand or have fancy parties and is asking a judge to up her child support to almost $89-thousand dollars per-month! (Lee)
JONAH HILL is cheating on his diet. Star magazine reports that the actor is trying to lose weight for his role in "22 Jump Street" but his trainer caught him with a bakery bag in his car and crumbs all over the seat! (Myers)
Chic Sh*t:
"Orange is the New Black" star TAYLOR SCHILLING says that she's eliminating the color orange from her wardrobe. The actress who plays inmate Piper Chapman on the hit Netflix series says that yes, her orange prison jumpsuit wardrobe is to blame. She told InStyle magazine: "I feel like if I wear orange now, I'm bizarrely connected to the show --it's like if I wore a sweatshirt or something that had my face on it. It's a little weird." (Bartha)
Grace notes:
JAMES TAYLOR is probably happy that Game Two of the World Series was on his home turf of Boston's Fenway Park. That's why the crowd sort of game him a pass for messing up the national anthem. It was Thursday night, and James walked out on the field with his acoustic guitar. But, he started singing "America The Beautiful" before a quick musical pivot to the song he was supposed to sing. James got a bit confused. He was scheduled to sing "America The Beautiful" during the seventh inning stretch. (Marino)
