Equal time:
The man who landed a gyrocopter on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol was arraigned yesterday and released to his Florida home. Sixty-one-year-old DOUG HUGHES has been charged with violating aircraft registration requirements and the national defense airspace, charges that together carry a combined penalty of up to four years in prison.
As his case moves through the courts, Hughes will be subject to home detention in Florida and will have to wear a GPS tracking device. He's also not allowed to fly any aircraft.
He's due back in court in Washington on May 8th. (Pacelli)Fast Food:
New food item from ice cream giant Ben & Jerry's --a burrito. Well, not really; technically it's a Brrr-ito. Get it?
The new taste treat consists of two scoops of ice cream topped with chocolate cookie crumbles and fudge drizzle, all wrapped up in a soft and chewy waffle cone. So even though it looks kinda like a burrito from the outside, it's really just another way to wrap up the flavors.
And just like anything at Ben & Jerry's, you can get it with two different scoops of their ice cream --they recommend Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Chocolate Fudge Brownie, Vanilla Toffee Bar Crunch and Salted Caramel Brownie, Hazed & Confused and New York Super Fudge Chunk... and a bunch of other combinations. Look for it in stores on Monday... which just happens to be National Pot Smoker's Day (4/20... get it?).
--o--
Ben & Jerry's also announced yesterday that they'll be putting their name on a craft beer, too.
The new brew will be called Salted Caramel Brownie Brown Ale, and will be bottled by New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins, CO. The beer is tentatively scheduled to hit liquor stores this fall.Models:
"Orange is the New Black" star LAVERNE COX is featured stripped-down in an editorial for the new issue of Allure magazine. Fashionista.com says Laverne decided to pose nude for the beauty feature in hopes that she "will encourage black and transgender women to embrace and love themselves for who they are." (Bartha)
For those of you who just can't get enough KIM KARDASHIAN --her new coffee table book of selfies, called Selfish is now available for pre-order. ("Selfish," by the way, is either the most clueless or the most brilliant name for a Kim-K project ever.) According to Fashionista.com, the woman whose nakedness "Broke the Internet" has already shot to number one on Amazon's best seller list for its "portrait photography" category.
Yes, portrait photography --the opposite of selfie photography. (Bartha)Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
Tomorrow is Record Store Day, which means hundreds of eBay whores will buy everything they can from independent record stores, then sell them for ridiculously jacked-up prices on eBay the next day. This prevents real music fans and collectors from getting the stuff they want. As usual, there are a ton of exclusive vinyl items available, but the strangest has to be MONTY PYTHON's "Galaxy Song," performed by Professor STEPHEN HAWKING! It's a very limited edition 7-inch single, and it's really him, speaking the words with his voice synthesizer. You can get a list of everything that's available tomorrow for Record Store Day, and where to get it at recordstoreday.com. (Marino)
Two major music events this weekend. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will induct its Class of 2015 on Saturday night at Cleveland's Public Hall:
--PAUL McCARTNEY will induct RINGO STARR.
--FALL OUT BOY welcomes GREEN DAY into the Hall.
--PATTI SMITH does the honors for the late LOU REED.
--MILEY CYRUS inducts JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS.
--STEVIE WONDER will induct BILL WITHERS.
--PETER WOLF of the J. GEILS BAND gets the PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND in.
--JOHN MAYER welcomes the late STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and his band DOUBLE TROUBLE into the Hall.
--STEVE CROPPER inducts THE 5 ROYALES.
Some of the performers for the evening will include BECK, DAVE GROHL, JOE WALSH, TOM MORELLO, JOHN LEGEND and JIMMY VAUGHAN. HBO will air the ceremonies on May 30th. (Marino) -
