Guilty Pleasures:
Are you a fan of video games but saddened that your preferred pastime doesn't have its own hall of fame like literally everything else in the U-S?
Wait no more. The Strong Museum in Rochester, New York, which is dedicated to "the history and exploration of play," just announced that it has opened the first ever World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The first inductees are the games themselves: PAC-MAN, which has been around since the early '80s; PONG, which has been around since way back in 1972; SUPER MARIO BROS, no explanation necessary; DOOM, one of the first 3-D first person shooter games; WORLD OF WARCRAFT, which has had more than one hundred million accounts made since 2004; and TETRIS, which was created by a researcher at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1984.
Honorable mentions go to Angry Birds, FIFA, The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, The Oregon Trail, The Sims, Space Invaders, Pokémon and Sonic the Hedgehog. (AB)Sucking the life out of the wire services:
Hot on the heels of the report from Radar Online that KIM KARDASHIAN and KANYE WEST were renting out Disneyland for the day this upcoming weekend for their daughter, NORTH's, second birthday, is this --Kim rented out the entire Staples Center in L.A. yesterday so that Kanye could celebrate his 38th birthday with his friends on the basketball court.
E! Online reports JOHN SALLEY was the announcer. Houston Rockets player JAMES HARDEN and rapper 2 CHAINZ were the coaches. And JOHN LEGEND sang the national anthem.
The teams reportedly included JUSTIN BIEBER, TYGA and PUSHA T along with NBA stars RUSSELL WESTBROOK and JOHN WALL, and the Laker Girls were there to cheer. KOBE BRYANT, MAGIC JOHNSON, CARMELO ANTHONY, SHAQUILLE O'NEAL and SCOTTY PIPPEN all made videos that showed up on the Jumbotron.
PS: What does it cost to rent out the Staples Center? Try $110-thousand dollars! But, that wasn't all! When Kanye got home, Kim surprised him with a brand new private basketball court in their huge backyard. (Marino)Fashion Emergency:
MILEY CYRUS is nearly-naked with a pig on the newest cover of Paper magazine. So, you know, just another Tuesday. The pig is her pet, Bubba Sue. Miley isn't quite as naked as KIM KARDASHIAN was when she "Broke the Internet" with her naked cover from the same magazine a couple of months ago. That's the one where Kim balanced a champagne glass on her butt. Miley gets points for this one for strategically-hugging her pig.
Word of warning: Racked.com says that's just the preview image. More "absolutely insane photos of Miley" are promised to drop today. (Bartha)Today's police blotter:
A Swedish man was arrested for growing facial hair.
39-year-old dad TORKEL KRISTOFFERS is normally clean shaven. But, he recently decided to change it up and grow a beard. Afterwards, Kristoffers was outside playing with his two-year-old son, when the kid climbed into a canvas grocery bag and asked to be carried around in it. A neighbor spotted the dad carrying the child in the bag, didn't recognize him, and called police to report a kidnapping-in-progress. Kristoffers was arrested, but quickly released once police realized the mistake.
A police spokesperson confirms, "It is currently not a crime to carry a child around in a bag." (Still)Women's Soccer World Cup:
The second-ranked US Women's team opened their pursuit of the 2015 Cup with a win over #10-ranked Australia, 3-1 yesterday. The two teams are situated in the Group D, which features three of the top ten teams in the world: the US, Sweden (#5), and Australia; in the other Group D match Sweden played Nigeria to a 3-3 draw.
American goals were scored by MEGAN RAPINOE, in the 12th minute; CHRISTEN PRESS in the 61st; and a second goal by Rapinoe in the 77th minute. The Aussies' tied it in the first period before the United States shut them down in the second. USA plays next against Sweden on Friday at 5 pm (Eastern; FOX). Former U.S. coach, PIA SUNDHAGE, is Sweden's current coach, thus making Friday one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage. (Lane) -
