Fall officially begins at 4:21 am (Eastern). It's the Autumnal equinox when the Sun enters the sign of Libra, and fall begins. Day and night are equally long today. At the equinox, the sun rises directly in the east and sets directly in the west.
And Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, ends at sunset today. It's a day of fasting, repentance and seeking forgiveness. He's dead, Jim:
Famous NY Yankee catcher (and later, manager) and Baseball Hall of Fame star YOGI BERRA. He was 90 years old. Yogi made headlines with memorable sayings which came to be called "Yogi-isms," the most famous probably being "It's déjà vu all over again."
He also said:
--"When you come to a fork in the road ... take it."
--"It ain't over 'til it's over"
--"You can observe a lot by watching."
--"You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six."
--"It gets late early out here."
and many others (See website for others). In fact, one of his best lines would probably be appropriate today, since he once said "You should always go to other people's funerals, otherwise, they won't come to yours."The Pope visits the US:
The Pope's official White House welcome will take place this morning at 11 am with a Papal parade along the Ellipse and the National Mall and a stop at Saint Matthew's Cathedral for a mid-day prayer (at 11:30 am) with US bishops before winding up at the White House for a personal meeting with PRESIDENT OBAMA.
Then, at 4:30 pm, His Holiness is scheduled to do the Junipero Serra Canonization Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
Editor's note: For you folks who want pictures for your website, feel free to take the picture of the Pope Bobblehead or any of the other pictures from the World Meeting of Families at the Philadelphia Convention Center I stopped by yesterday. They are on my Facebook page... and you don't have to be a "friend" to see them. (Ross)PRESIDENT OBAMA and VP JOE BIDEN greeted Pope FRANCIS yesterday afternoon at Joint Base Andrews, as the pontiff began his three-city, six-day visit to the U.S. The pope walked off his aircraft at 4:05 p.m. and onto a red carpet lined by a military honor guard and a gathering of Catholic bishops.
And Time magazine reports that the pope is pushing back on the notion that he's a "liberal" and out of touch with many Catholics. On board his flight to D.C., he told reporters, "Some people might say some things sounded slightly more left-ish, but that would be a mistake of interpretation."
He added, "It is I who follows the church... my doctrine on all this... on economic imperialism, is that of the social doctrine of the church." (Pacelli)The Reel Deal:
The folks plugging the upcoming Snoopy movie now have a website where you can become a Peanuts character. Peanutizeme.com lets you choose your hair coloring, facial features and clothing to create a cartoon image of yourself.
Football:
The Minnesota Vikings announced on Monday that they have not been able to reach a new contract agreement with JOE JURANITCH, the man who plays Ragnar the Viking, a crowd favorite who has entertained for the last 21 years. Juranitch is looking for $20-thousand dollars per game over the next 10 years. Ragnar the Viking is an independent contractor and not even an official member of the organization... since 2007 he has shared the spotlight in Minnesota with Viktor, the team's official mascot. Juranitch currently earns $15-hundred bucks a game. (Lane)
