Martin Luther King, Jr, holiday:
The National Parks Service is providing free admission to all 405 National Parks today to honor Dr King; the list can be found HERE... Of course, there's already a large number of parks which are free of charge, but several of the larger parks are waiving their admission fees, including Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Olympic National Park.
Top talkables of the day:
Girl Scout cookies officially went on sale Saturday.
This is the second year that the Scouts will be selling their cookies online in addition to door-to-door and at shopping malls, supermarkets and other locations. But to buy cookies online, customers must receive an email from a Scout and pay shipping and handling charges.
If you're wondering where you can buy cookies near you, you can plug your zip code into the Girl Scouts' website and it will find your cookies right away.
As usual, there'll be Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Patties (Do-si-dos), shortbread cookies (also known as Trefoils), Caramel DeLites (also called Samoas), Lemonades (celebrating its 10th birthday this year), Toffee-tastic, gluten-free Trios, Savannah Smiles and Rah-Rah Raisins.
The reasons some cookies have two different names is because there are dueling bakeries making the cookies, and one or the other has patented the name.
If you order cookies now, you'll get them at the end of February.Grace notes:
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN opened his "The River 2016" tour Saturday night in Pittsburgh. After a three-hour show, Bruce and the E STREET BAND paid tribute to DAVID BOWIE by doing his classic tune, "Rebel Rebel." Bruce told the audience that he met Bowie back in 1973 and then during the sessions for David's "Young Americans" album, Bruce remembered taking the bus over from Jersey to visit David at the studio in Philly. Bowie covered two Springsteen songs very early on, "It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City" and "Growin' Up." Last Monday, shortly after Bowie's death was announced, Bruce Tweeted (quote), "Over here on E Street, we're feeling the great loss of David Bowie. David was a visionary artist and an early supporter of our music." (Marino)
Sheer stupidity:
A Tennessee woman was so upset that she didn't win the Powerball lottery, she started a crowd-funding campaign to get back all the cash she spent on tickets.
CINNAMON NICOLE from Cordova claimed she spent all of her family's savings buying tickets, assuming she would win the $1.6-billion-dollar jackpot. When she didn't win, she panicked. Her GoFundMe page stated: "Please help me and my family as we have exhausted all of our funds. We spent all of our money on lottery tickets and are now in dire need of cash."
Cinnamon managed to raise $800-dollars before the website cancelled her page for allegedly violating their terms of service. (Still) -
