Today's police blotter:
A Louisiana man faces 20-years to life in prison for stealing some candy bars.
34-year-old JACOBIA GRIMES pocketed $31-dollars worth of chocolate without paying for it. Orleans Parish prosecutors are charging Grimes under a Louisiana state law that allows minor crimes to be elevated to felonies. The law can be used on offenders who've been convicted of "theft of goods" at least twice. Grimes has five prior convictions. Grimes pleaded not guilty to the charges last week. There's a movie about Speedy Gonzales in the works!
Warner Brothers is looking to make the 1960s Looney Tunes cartoon character into the star of a new animated movie. And Deadline reports Mexico's own EUGENIO DERBEZ --who did the voice of Shrek in the Spanish version of the film-- will be voicing Speedy. "In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzalez," he says. "He was like a superhero to us... and besides being Mexican- my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn't be better."
Back in the day, of course, MEL BLANC voiced the mouse.Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
More than 200 fans and family turned out to say goodbye to A TRIBE CALLED QUEST rapper PHIFE DAWG yesterday in Queens, New York. The Daily News says St. Albans Park in Jamaica was full of Tribe memorabilia with Tribe tunes playing from iPhones and car speakers. Phife, whose real name was MALIK TAYLOR, died last month from diabetes complications. He was 45. (Marino)
Lowering expectations:
It's one thing to confuse North and South Dakota, but Maryland and Massachusetts? Russell Athletics messed up big time when they shipped out shirts to Walmart with the outline of the state of Mass and the logo of the Maryland Terps on it. Walmart has apologized for the mistake and is pulling the shirts from the store.
"We are working with Russell Athletic to determine how this happened and in the meantime are removing the shirt from our stores. We understand the pride Marylanders feel for the Terps, and apologize for the mistake." (Myers)Weird science:
There's a new website that claims to help you find love by smelling a dirty t-shirt. The project is called , "Smell Dating" They dub themselves as "the first mail odor dating service." (Very clever!)
CBS News says Smell Dating works by first sending users a t-shirt that they wear for three days and three nights without putting on deodorant or perfume. They return the used T-shirt to the company so they can cut it up to send to potential mates. The sender also receives swatches of shirts worn by others to smell and determine which scent they like. If two people like one another's smell, Smell Dating provides contact information for both parties. Participation in the project costs $25 to cover the cost of shipping and handling. (The best part: You have that much less laundry to do!)
The idea behind it is to get away from relying on the perfect selfie or the wittiest bio and base your compatibility more on of an intuitive, chemical connection. Research has shown you can gather a lot of information about a new person from their scent alone, including gender, sexual orientation and age. (Bartha) -
