I'm a Poll Man:
Some new poll numbers:
--A new CBS NEWS/YouGov poll says that 66-percent of Americans say a candidate must agree with their views on gun policy to earn their vote. The other 34 percent said a candidate can hold differing views on gun legislation, and still earn their vote.
Sixty-eight-percent of Republicans and the same percentage of Democrats said a candidate must share their views on guns. Sixty-five percent of independents had that same view.
--Fifty-three-percent of those responding to a new Fox News poll say it's more important to protect citizens from gun violence, versus 40-percent who think it's more important to protect the rights of people to own guns. Further, 91-percent support requiring criminal background checks for those who want to buy a gun, while 84-percent support mandatory mental health checks. (Pacelli)Going Chapter 11:
Gun-maker Remington has filed for bankruptcy.
The 200-year-old company did a Chapter 11 filing in Delaware bankruptcy court, listing $100 million to $500 million in estimated liabilities. Remington's filing comes after the weekend marches across the US, seeking tighter laws to fight gun violence. Bloomberg News reports the filing will allow Remington to keep operating, and the deal with lenders is subject to court approval. The company currently employs 35-hundred people and is among the largest American manufacturers of ammunition and firearms.Trendspotting:
The #MeToo movement may have killed the push-up bra. The Hollywood Reportersays a new retail analytics report "Edited" shows that sales of the push-up bra declined 45 percent in the second half of 2017 compared to the same period the year prior. Victoria's Secret is taking the biggest hit saleswise. Lingerie sales have trended more toward relaxed styles like bralettes and triangle bras. there were 400 percent more triangle bras than push-up bras in the U.S. market at the end of 2017.
The decline in the push-up follows declining sales of stiletto heels, down 12 percent last year. Women are redefining what's "sexy" outside of the "male gaze," and feminism is driving the fashion conversation. Everyone from Madewell to Urban Outfitters is offering simpler, sportier bra styles. Calvin Klein is capitalizing on its classic briefs and sports bras. Direct-to-consumer startups like Everlane and ThirdLove have emphasized superior fit and comfort instead of sex-appeal. And American Eagle's Aerie brand is emphasizing role models instead of supermodels in its advertising, using Team USA gymnast ALY RAISMAN and "Blackish" and "Grownish" star YARA SHAHIDI as the faces of its brand.
