Today's the 18th day of the partial government shutdown and in case you're wondering, not everybody is working... National Geographic reports our national parks are mostly open --but you might not wanna use a restroom there. Ssme 16-thousand parks service employees have been furloughed since the shutdown began, leaving a small number active for policing and security... and clean-up, meaning the trashcans, and toilets can be overflowing when you visit.
Vaccination news: Patients say the new vaccination you get if you haven't had shingles is quite painful. The Shingrix vaccine is reportedly more effective than the old Zostavax one, and also must be taken in two doses, the second one after two to six months. But doctors say because the first one is so painful, many are not returning for the second dose. That's a problem, since the new vaccine is 90-percent effective, where the older one is only 51-percent effective.
In other news, an outbreak of measles is underway in New York, Oregon and Washington. Over 90 percent of the babies in the US are vaccinated, and just as well, since one in 20 children that get the virus develop pneumonia and one or two per thousand die.
