Probably coulda seen this coming: A 54 year old guy in Massachusetts ate about one-and-a-half bags of black licorice every day, and is now dead. But surprise --a construction worker by trade, doctors say it wasn't the sugar in his daily treat, but the glycyrrhizic acid in the licorice. The New England Journal of Medicine reports the active ingredient can --and did-- cause "hypertension, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, fatal arrhythmias, and renal failure" in the guy. Hypokalemia is when a person's potassium levels in their blood become dangerously low.
Over in Vietnam, cops picked up a whole bunch of used condoms --more than 320-thousand of them-- that apparently were gonna to be illegally resold to unsuspecting customers. Yes, they were reportedly washed out, re-shaped with a tool and then put in bags. But not sterilized. The woman who reportedly owned the warehouse in southern Binh Duong province said she was paid 17-cents per kilogram for a bag of the condoms, and she had 360 bags worth (just under 800 pounds). And here's the really unsavory part --we don't know how many of the condoms have already been resold on the market.
Congrats to CARRIE UNDERWOOD, who'll be doing a Christmas special this year on HBO Max. It's being taped this fall with a live orchestra and choir, performing a “combination of beloved traditional favorites celebrating her faith and the spiritual nature of the holiday, as well as new original material” from her upcoming full-length Christmas album, “My Gift.” Look for it on CD beginning today; it'll be out on vinyl at the end of next month.
More postponements for movies. The Hollywood Reporter says the folks at Disney will be moving the upcoming SCARLETT JOHANSSON film, "Black Widow" from next month to May 7th of next year and STEVEN SPIELBERG's "West Side Story," from this December to next December.
Like you didn't know: Secretary of State MIKE POMPEO told the NY Post that China’s New York consulate is being used as a major hub for spies after a NYPD cop was arrested and charged with spying for the Chinese government. Pompeo says there's more arrests to come, as well. China, by the way, has denied that the NY cop was one of their secret agents. This follows a report from the State Department this past July, which claimed Chinese consulates in more than two dozen US cities were using undercover Communist Party soldiers with covers as high school or university students so they could engage in spying.
