I've always found great pleasure in packing my kids lunch. I though it was a good way to make sure they had something tasty and nutritious during their school day, plus they did not like cafeteria food. I couldn't really blame them, the meals weren't bad, but you can only do chicken nuggets, pizza and salad bar for so long. There were other offerings that just didn't fit the appetite too. Sometimes, I'd include a note, and sometimes I'd get one back. Often I'd pack something extra for a friend, or an item that had extra value when it came to swapping food. All kids do this, usually something like a Hostess Ding Dong or Donuts garnered the most currency value. I used to trade my Pecan Sandies cookies when I was a kid; my mom always put this in my lunch, they must have always been on sale. I could also tell when she was out of food when I'd get cream cheese and jelly sandwiches. Now, I pack myself Greek yogurt and fruit. With my kids, I have one that won't eat cold lunch meat but loves cold grilled cheese sandwiches and another that digs bologna, preferably without the bread, but that's not an option. I don't want to know what gets thrown away however, I'd love to accidentally trade up lunches..anything to get a Zebra Cake. I'll bet my co-workers would trade something really good for that.
