Today we celebrate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln, one of the most popular presidents in United States history. It is a national holiday. This year we can see a major motion picture about the man who's birth we are celebrating, an Academy Award nominated movie at that, topping all films with 12 nominations, including best picture. History has frozen Lincoln into something like the American conscience: kind, principled, winsome, idealistic. And he was, indeed, all of those things. Might be a good idea to tie the two together on today, if it's technically a day-off. Lincoln is still in theaters (rated PG13) in case she wants to take her teens to go see Steven Spielberg's film about the 16th president and his battle to end slavery. Not a bad idea if I do say so myself. But watch out for the fat grams in that movie popcorn.
