Halloween happenings and Fall Festivals grow in scale year after year. Neighborhoods decorate as a precursor for Christmas with lights and large animated pumpkins and spooky things. Trunk or Treat, haunted hayrides and spooky garage tours are happening and the sweets just keep on coming. Costume options are plentiful be it homemade or a Party City version of the boxed mask and cloth jumper I wore as a kid. Now that boxed costume is shown on face book as a 'like' if you remember these. Creativity is helpful but participation is what makes this time become the memory that it is. Halloween is happening on a 'school night' and parent's and teacher's everywhere are well braced. Traffic will get heavy early today with many leaving work early to get home and get their little one dressed up and out for tricks or treats. It's one night when neighbors get to say hello to one and other if they like while their kids enjoy pretending to be a character they watch on their iPad daily. This is that time when bite-sized candy bars help up give into the desire to enjoy three different types of candy. There is nothing 'fun' about fun-sized candy bars which are priced to sell and staring me in the face whenever I enter a convenience store. Large bags mixed with Snickers, Three Musketeers, Butterfingers and more are saying 'buy me.' My friend Miranda purchases her candy today, on the day of Halloween, because she just can't stand to have it in the house as it's too much 'fun' to eat. I purchase candy I have no desire to eat, which means no chocolate. I've bags of Mike n Ikes, Mary Jane's and Fun Dip. No little goblin will turn their nose up to this stuff and I won't eat it because it's not my preference. If I had a bowl of fun-sized M&M's in the house they would last maybe two days and I'd feel terribly guilty when I was staring at the empty bowl they were placed it. Then I'd convince myself that I needed to run ten miles to burn off all that sugar. I do hide the Fun Dip from my kids, this stuff is pure colored sugar. Kids on sugar equals a crazed parent. I try to keep most sugar consumption to daytime hours when there's a chance of working it out of your system easier by doing homework and chores. Yes that's it homework and chores. Maybe Halloween should happen earlier in the day so our sugared kids can do homework and chores after consuming massive amounts of their sweet 'loot'. If I'm supplying the costume and candy it's only right, right?
