Like many other women and moms, I’ve been chatting on Zoom with my friends, hearing about their experiences with the COVID-impacted back to school season, and their heartfelt understanding of the difficulties and daily victories. My conclusion? COVID sucks, but women are the best. Here’s just a glimpse of what matriarchs are living through in this unprecedented time.
Numerous local lockdowns are in force in the UK, limiting meeting spaces to 6 people or less in England. The youth of Scotland have been back to school for about a month, in England, only two weeks. There is a fair level of nervousness regarding the safety of sending kids to closed classroom spaces, and around 40% of parents across the UK are still not sending their kids back. Homeschooling practices, however, have skyrocketed.
In Australia, the school situation varies from state to state. The capital city of Sydney has been open for a few months now, but they still have COVID-safe practices in place. In Melbourne, VIC, where their COVID numbers remain high, they’ve extended a 6-week city-wide lockdown. The isolation has been taking quite a toll on the mental health of these Australians, especially for parents who now are homeschooling for an indefinite period while also maintaining their own professional workloads.
In Canada, every province and territory is now planning to reopen schools. School divisions, boards, and individual schools may have different plans. As with the other commonwealths, Canadian parents are agonizing over what to do, when their district will make a decision to reopen, and whether to rely strictly on homeschooling.
Of course, we in the States are divided; the biggest question seems to be: what is really the truth about COVID? But in the U.S., amidst this heaviness, we still lunch at Chipotle, enjoy mint flavored Oreos, and then attempt to work off said Oreos on our Peloton bikes.
Unanswered questions, strong opinions, face masks, and social distancing fill our globe, yet every woman and mother I’ve read about or spoken to has, understandably, been longing for some peace and empathy. For themselves, their families, and their homeland.
Now that in-person socialization has been replaced by FaceTime, it’s easier to see what our respective circles look like, we have a more accessible circle of experts and hope. On the air, She’s not seeking to rehash a problem, She’s seeking answers, which none of us have. So instead, give her a break, or a laugh. Right now She needs to hear what is working, who is healing, who has successfully navigated this odd new school year, and when they will restock her grocers’ freezer section with more Halo Top.
