"At the car wash... whoah, whoah whoah!" The lyrics in this song are true: “working my fingers to the bone” shows the truth inside a full-service car wash. Car washers work super hard! Regardless of the climate, from the bitter cold to the hottest heat, you can see these folks outside buffing, drying, and cleaning the place you (usually) spend a good majority of your time. To that, I say: tip them well!
My daughters and I visited Lava Self Service Car Wash this weekend, all three cars in tow. After explaining how it all worked, we spent the next hour cleaning and detailing our cars at a minimal price, compared to the full-service shop. We spoke about the appreciation we had for the car washers and then moved through a list of people who serve us well but might get overlooked, especially during COVID. The intake receptionist at a medical facility, the delivery driver, pharmacy tech, food counter worker, local community landscapers, I’m sure you could add to this list. When I went for some routine blood work and thanked the tech for being such a Superhero, she teared up. When I saw my neighbor give our Mailman a bottle of water it made me feel grateful. It doesn't take much to let another human know they matter. We hear stories on the air of people doing good things for others and it makes the listener feel better, from local stories to celebrities granting life-saving gifts. So choose your vibe, love your tribe, and empathize with the families who are unclear on what their future holds, from summer camp cancellations to the possibility of losing a home due to having their job lost to COVID. Let's hold them up.
