It’s watermelon season!
What a great time to put your expert fruit-picking skills to the test! First, give that watermelon a good thump with your finger. If it sounds hollow, like a deep drumbeat, you’re on the right track. Next, take a close look at the rind. A vibrant, glossy green color with minimal blemishes indicates ripeness. Don’t forget to check the belly of the watermelon (I did not know a watermelon had a belly either) – a creamy yellow spot suggests it had plenty of time to ripen under the sun.
Finally, trust your instincts and follow your nose! A sweet watermelon will have a gentle, fruity scent that will have you dreaming of blender drinks and picnics.
Then let the judgement begin! A cold piece of sweet seedless watermelon says summer. Some people say to mix this with feta cheese and mint for a salad, some say to spread sour cream on a chilled slice, salted watermelon is in a category all by itself.
I’m not hearing any songs coming out of any of that…#watermelonsugar.
