Teach Your Children Well

My friend Linda in Nebraska has had her kid's home on summer vacation for the past two weeks, and she's in full summer swing: driving her kids to classes, outings and the pool. Meanwhile, my kids are still going strong with the reading, writing and arithmetic. Okay, they are pretending to care about school while the next two steamy weeks challenge them with warm temperatures that suck away all desire to take any test. The teachers are challenged too with a room full of antsy kids who would much rather be at camp than camped out in a desk trying to comprehend the final amount of algebra required by the state for their learning. It could prove smart to focus on the teachers at this time as they really are the unsung heroes who need some time off after months of teaching every type of personality offered in a child, middle and high schooler. Many teachers actually work a summer job in order to meet their financial needs. I find this sad yet standard for those who educate our future. Most of the teachers I know are up before 6 am and in the classroom past 4:00 p.m. Most teachers could use some extra hours of sleep; I know I would after dealing with so many different hormones.

Not all dogs are strong enough to splash and swim around in the water; in fact, when dogs are on a boat they should wear a doggie life jacket. And beware of the heat. Temperatures near 100 degrees put pets at risk for heatstroke, which can lead to brain damage.

Swim season is in full effect and even though it's scary to think about a possible water accident, she needs to be prepared because they happen every summer. CPR doubles a drowning person's chances of survival and she can take a 30-minute do-it-yourself course by logging onto the website at www.americanheart.org
- "Come back here and put on your helmet" is a typical saying as she watches her child try to speed away on a bike. Studies show that head injuries have increased 10% since 1991 possibly because riders feel more confident and take more risks; this inflated sense of security can cause many an accident. There are more than 6,000 bicycle rider deaths per year in the US and 80% of them are due to head injuries. Safe bike rules are necessary for all riders.
She health
The FDA reports that the average American takes in 82 grams of added sugars every day. That's 20 teaspoons, which equal 317 extra calories. They claim the worst "healthy" drink is Vitamin Water; all flavors equal about 130 calories and 33 grams of sugar. An Arizona-brand Kiwi Strawberry water has 360 calories and 84 grams of sugar. Besides the drinks, many of the foods she thinks are healthy and good for her are not. Here are the six most misunderstood foods in America, according to a recent Yahoo article:
- Bran Muffin: most have more fat and calories than 2 Kit Kat bars.
- Caesar Salad: too much dressing, cheese, and croutons equals about 20 McNuggets.
- Chicken Wrap: the tortilla alone can equal 400 calories; overall, at least 35 grams of fat equal to 20 strips of bacon.
- Turkey Burger: unless prepared fresh at home, these burgers could be made with high- fat turkey. Add the condiments and bun, and she may as well eat a Quarter Pounder.
- Fruit Smoothies: unless it says 100% fruit, many smoothies are packed with high-fructose corn syrup, sugar, and high-fat ice cream. Know what's going in the blender before you order.
