My actor friend Lenny frequently attends New York theater productions. He always purchases a t-shirt from Broadway shows he did not like. It's a great way to begin a chat. We were at a barbecue, he was wearing a "Promises, Promises" shirt (currently on Broadway starring Kristen Chenowith and Sean Hayes ) and the first thing I asked was what did you think of that show?" This is how I found out about his unique way of dissing something and also that this year lacked any great blockbuster show. It does seem odd to support a show you do not like by purchasing product with hard earned money and then advertising it by actually wearing the shirt. But hey, it made for great conversation. For the next 30 minutes we talked about shows we hated and how Nathan Lane could not wait for his contract with "The Addams Family" to be over. What a conundrum this is. Some people can only dream of seeing a Broadway show, some actors will do anything to be in one and here we are critiquing million dollar productions. I'm torn when I think about him wearing a radio station t-shirt. A good looking guy wearing call letters could come in handy, for the right reason of course. And no matter how much radio has changed a t-shirt is a premium item. So wear your logo proudly, look for it on the street and praise those who do some free advertising for you. And if you run into Lenny, tell him this year's theater calendar looks much more promising.
