She's a MOM

Mothers Day is Sunday. When I was growing up I'd serve my mom breakfast in bed on this day; in looking back I am now grateful she never said anything about the mess I left in the kitchen. I'm sure she cleaned it up. We would visit my Grandmother on this day, my dads mom, and she would feed us in full Italian style reminding us she did not like to eat out. Eating out was almost against the law in my house, so was purchasing pre-made or processed food. Meals from scratch were the norm. Yes, times have changed dramatically. But for the record, I did wait for my Grandmothers move to heaven before I started making my meatballs in Paul Newman's Sockarooni Sauce.

As a mom I too have enjoyed the sweet breakfast in bed treatment where any dirty dish found afterwards in the kitchen was as much of a gift as the meal, because it was made with love. I've saved every picture, card planter, picture frame, macaroni necklace and letter my daughters have ever given me to commemorate this special day. And, for many years I too felt happier eating at home like my grandmother, because it really isn't always a treat taking toddlers out to eat. Pizza and salad at home would suit me fine.

Spa days, new wallets and jewelry are great gifts, so are framed memorable photos and scrapbooks. Time well spent is really the greatest gift of all, being together without running throughout the classic drill of rushing from one place to another could make this the best Mothers Day ever.
