What a year!
It started with the shocking violence in our Capitol and is ending with yet another COVID-19 variant, causing nations to close borders and individuals to wonder if this will ever end.
America is riven on just about any issue you can name.
We are increasingly angry and depressed, shouting more than listening blaming more than blessing.
Your job, as an air talent, has never been more difficult and more urgent.
The decisions you make about the content you offer have the potential to heal or to harm.
We know that division, hate, outrageous accusations and calls to violence can actually make the authors of such more popular. If click-bait is your goal, the answer is easy.
But if unity and understanding, peace and progress, mental and physical health are the target, the answer is more nuanced.
The best I can offer is to share a story you may already know. It’s worth reading again:
“An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. ‘A fight is going on inside me,’ he said to the boy. ‘It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.’
He continued, ‘The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.’
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, ‘Which wolf will win?’
The old Cherokee simply replied, ‘The one you feed.’ "
I think you know which one I hope you choose.
