Beats 'Halloween Superstore'
-
Malls -- the big regional enclosed shopping meccas, that is -- are dying. And that's why many are going for "unconventional" tenants like Target (usually in free-standing stores) or, increasingly, supermarkets. That's weird, except that it's back to the future, in a way. Back in the 60's, groceries were common in malls. I remember an Acme in King of Prussia Mall through the 80's, for example. There were also garden centers (Arcadian Gardens in Garden State Plaza was a longtime fixture that went away years ago). Today, with retail in trouble, they're putting things like Whole Foods in where department stores used to be. (Chicago Tribune)
