Another reason newspapers are in deep trouble: Advertisers are bypassing them for cheaper alternatives. Why pay the New York Times' rate when you can buy a network of other sites and reach the same number of users at a cheaper rate? Well, maybe there's value in having your ad on a respected, familiar site rather than a bunch of blogs, but advertisers aren't thinking that way. When money's involved, they never do.
