I Do Not Like This, Sam-I-Am
-
I do not have kids, wo I had no idea that the children's picture book is dying. Seems that the zeal to start kids learning earlier and earlier, lest they fall behind whoever they might fall behind, has led to parents and teachers ditching "Goodnight Moon" in favor of "real books." Now, I started reading at age 2 (hey, I gotta be able to brag about SOMETHING in my life; there ain't much else), but picture books were a part of my development as much as reading books with lots of words and advanced material. Following along with pictures and words is a different experience from plain reading, just as video and radio are different media. It would be a shame for kids to miss out on that. (New York Times)
