Ribbon, Schmibbon. Just Give To Research And Encourage Early Detection
-
As many of you know, I have a personal sake in the fight against breast cancer, what with my wife being a survivor and my own mastectomy (yes, really) a long time ago. So you'd think we'd be all about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and all the pink ribbons plastered on everything. But then there are those women who oppose the pink ribbons because they think it trivializes the issue and ends up being full of fluff and feminism-lite. I can understand that. My problem with it is that there's no real need for awareness, since, well, is there anyone who ISN'T aware of breast cancer? The need is to work for a cure and emphasize that this thing has never been more survivable if you detect the cancer early enough. THAT'S what needs awareness. Does a pink ribbon do the job?
