You'll Always Have Your Deluxe DVD Of 'Beaches'
-
Things are changing in the way people get their entertainment, but nobody has to tell you that. The trick for the movie studios is to figure out how to make money on it when most people are switching from buying movies on DVD to renting them online. Movie sales were a huge profit center for the studios, but when you watch them on Netflix on a stream... well, not so much. This could impact the kind of movies you see from here on out, because the financial model is very broken. There's really no reason to buy a movie if you can watch it on demand on a stream at anytime. And while we're on the subject, here's an interview with the biggest recorded music distributor in America, the middleman who gets CDs into stores. He's already seen the implosion of his magazine distribution business, and CDs aren't looking too viable for the long run, either. Digital means that some business models are heading at high speed into a brick wall. (Los Angeles Times/Knoxville News-Sentinel; Thanks to Frank Murphy at WWST (Star 102.1)/Knoxville for the link)
