He'd had 33 years of ear trouble, including a chronic ache and partial deafness. A nurse finally found the problem and fixed it: He had a tooth in his ear canal. He can't explain how it got there. Maybe he put it in there when he was very little. Did you put stuff in your ears when you were a tot? I can't remember doing that, but it seems like it's one of those things kids do.
