Stay Away From The Linguistic Third Rail

A Michigan Supreme Court judge running for re-election stands accused by another judge of using the N-word in a private conference with other judges four years ago. He says he said it in an "impassioned plea" talking about someone being treated poorly. His accuser says he used it in plural in referring to a judicial candidate. Oh, yeah, one more thing: The judge who used the N-word is African-American. His accuser is white. They're both Republicans (he a conservative, she a "moderate" -- leaning liberal), and have clashed on many things before. Does that make any difference? Is the word ever acceptable? Does it depend on who said it? (Detroit Free Press)
