You're Better Off Never Giving Speeches
-
A high school football coach in New Orleans went undefeated so far this season but had to resign. Why? Because of comments he made at a function about how many of his parents come from single-parent homes and look to him as a father figure. He noted seeing his players' birth certificates showing 15-year-old mothers and asterisks where the father's name would be. This raised a hue and cry from some people who said it was stereotypical and bad, and it didn't help that he opened the speech by noting he's a white coach at a 100% black school, or that he was suspended a year ago for using the N-word (although it was to relay to his team what the opposing fans were calling them). Is what he said offensive or the truth, or both? Should he have resigned? (WWL-TV/New Orleans)
