The Spirit Of Giving
-
At Dartmouth, the students are so into donating to the school that they named and shamed a student who refused to donate. They published her name in the newspaper and scolded her for being a holdout. But I'm with her: when they threaten to embarrass you unless you "donate," it's no longer voluntary, it's extortion. But they all do it when they print lists of donations in the alumni magazine and you're not on it because you didn't give. Me, I haven't given to either of my schools in years, and I don't care if I'm not on the list, but there's not-so-subtle pressure to pony up. They never leave you alone. (New York Times)
