Give The People What They E-Mail You That You They Want
-
So people went to hear Steve Martin be interviewed at New York's 92nd Street Y. And he's promoting a book that's set in the art world, so the interviewer and he talked about nothing but art. And the bored audience, which included people watching in other cities, sent a fusillade of e-mails demanding that the interviewer ask him about other stuff, and she eventually complied, although not enough to head off refund demands. Now, Steve and the interviewer are upset that the course of the interview was altered by audience feedback in midstream. But if your audience expects you to do one thing, you give them another, and they don't like it, do you expect the audience to just take whatever you give them? In 2010, especially with how the Internet has changed things, you ARE going to hear feedback before you're even done, and it MIGHT cause you to alter what you're doing. That's something creative types will have to get used to experiencing. (New York Times)
