Stacked Against You
-
For years, conventional wisdom is that retail stores should be streamlined and modern and uncluttered. The fact that Walmart was so successful despite being way more cluttered than Target seemed to be an outlier. Then, Walmart succumbed and tried to be Target, and flopped. The result: Stores are piling up stuff and sticking stacks of merchandise in every open spot, because they've discovered people spend more when there's more stuff all over the place. The more comfortable you are in a store, the less you buy, apparently, so they're going to throw a lot of stuff at you. Your wallet doesn't stand a chance. (New York Times; subscription required)
