Too Many Teams Where There's Not Enough Interest
-
The end of the NHL regular season could mean the end of the Atlanta Thrashers, who are for sale and who could be moved without trouble, because they're co-owned with Philips Arena and therefore wouldn't be nreaking a lease. With the Phoenix Coyotes possibly moving back to Winnipeg, the question is where the Thrashers will play next season. Quebec, if it approves a new arena? Kansas City, with Sprint Center wide open? Las Vegas, if they finally okay a new arena (although it's hard to think of where they'd play in the meantime, since Thomas and Mack is too small and Orleans Arena is REALLY too small)? Or back to Atlanta, where they'll be considered lame-duck unless locals buy the team? Maybe the NHL needs contraction, not that the union would allow it; they do have too many teams, and too many in markets that can't support them. (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)
