By The 28th Inning, I'd Have Intentionally Walked Everyone Just To End It
-
April 18th is the 30th anniversary of the longest pro baseball game ever, the one between the Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings that took 33 innings and 8 hours and 25 minutes to complete over two days; 32 innings were played overnight on April 18-19 after a 30 minute delay due to problems with the lights at McCoy Stadium. Cal Ripken Jr. and Wade Boggs played in that game, along with 21 others who eventually made it to the majors (including Rich Gedman, Bob Ojeda, Bruce Hurst, Floyd Rayford, and Chico Walker). They stopped play at 3:30 am Easter morning after the league president was called and he told them that the rule was that it was supposed to have been suspended after 12:50 am. Whoops. 19 fans were left in the stands when the game was suspended; they resumed it on June 23rd. Still amazing. (Boston Globe)
