Gannett, which owns a lot of the remaining newspapers in America, has furloughed a lot of its workers since the recession hit. Fair enough, except that their executives, who promised to take furloughs and pay cuts, too, more than made up for it in bonuses. If the company's in such straits that it has to have workers take unpaid days off, how can anyone be earning a bonus? (New York Times; subscription required)
